I recently attended an interesting meeting, where the agenda was set up to mimic Shark Tank , a network television show. On one side of the stage were investment companies, hospital CTOs and Payers (the Sharks). On the other side of the stage were executives from Hi-Tech healthcare innovators, demonstrating their latest apps/software developed to elevate the information flow and data storage between patients, doctors, insurance companies, hospitals, etc. (more…)

Consolidation is the buzz word in todays healthcare environment. Recent findings show that healthcare reform will continue to push physicians further away from the traditional independently owned and operated private practice setting. While consolidation in the healthcare industry is not new, it seems to have increased rapidly in recent years as physician practices, hospitals and other healthcare organizations contend with rising costs of care and the new technologies needed to process and report medical treatments and patient outcomes. The Affordable Care Act is having a major impact on the healthcare industry including the Payer-Provider relationship. The creation of large Integrated Delivery Networks comprised of hospitals and other healthcare organizations as well as Accountable Care Organizations are driving some of this change as they move from volume based care to value based care. When we developed our first physician Internet panel in November 2000, the aspect that was quite astonishing was the speed with which physicians completed the study. We programmed our first study, mailed out our recently-recruited e-mails and waited in anxious anticipation to see what would happen. Every hour we would check the counter and every hour we would see the number of physicians completing the study at a faster rate than we ever saw before. We realized that we had a technique that would allow us to complete studies in half the time than traditional phone survey. But, as Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, for everything you gain, you lose something else. (more…)
